Legend Series 1 3 Hp Professional 3 bolt Mount Continuous Feed Compact Garbage Disposal
Garbage Disposals That Make Kitchen Clean-Up Easy
One of your most useful kitchen appliances is one that you rarely see, but what it lacks in aesthetics, it makes up for in function. We're talking about your garbage disposal, the indispensable tool that grinds up food and flushes them away. Garbage disposals are an efficient and effective solution for common food waste.
"There are two types of garbage disposals: batch feed and continuous feed," explains Jessica Petrino, educator and appliance expert at AJ Madison. "The difference is how the disposal gets turned on. Batch feed disposals require a piece to be inserted and twisted inside the sink. You must activate it intentionally and, for this reason, it is considered the most family-safe option."
Continuous feed disposals are more popular, though, Petrino notes. "A light switch or countertop button activates continuous feed disposals. Once activated, they churn continuously until turned off."
When it comes to finding the right disposal for you, Petrino recommends considering the power of the appliance to match your needs. "Garbage disposals are measured in horsepower," she says. "Most models range from 1/3 HP to 1 and 1/4 HP. The lower power models are recommended for small kitchens and tight spaces; higher power models take up more space under the sink but are more effective at grinding up food particles."
To help you narrow down your search, we've rounded up some of the best continuous feed garbage disposals we've found across the Internet.
Our Picks
Top Pick
InSinkErator Garbage Disposal
The InSinkErator is made by the company that invented garbage disposals back in 1927. There are several models in this line with varying outputs, but this is a solidly mid-range choice, with a horsepower that should be adequate for most homeowners' needs. We found the garbage disposal fairly easy to install. It's an affordable choice with a 26-ounce grind chamber capacity that makes quick work of food scraps like eggshells and potato peels. The galvanized steel components contribute to durability.

GX PRO Series 1/2 HP Continuous Feed Garbage Disposal
The GX Pro by Moen boasts a compact but capable design. This disposal takes care of most common food scraps, including seeds, peels, and woody vegetables like asparagus stalks. This model is compatible with the majority of existing three-bolt mounting assemblies for garbage disposals (including other brands' mounts, like the popular InSinkErator above) so it should be a fairly simple installation. The high-speed magnetized motor is designed to minimize jams and is fairly quiet. There's also a five-year warranty.

- Long warranty

There's a removable splash guard to make cleanup easier, and it's sound-insulated, which makes for a quieter grind than many other models. Like the Moen model, this has a permanent magnet motor that cuts down on jams. Stainless steel components help reduce the risk of rust, and there's an eight-year warranty. One reviewer noted that installation took 10 minutes, which is an amazing feat.

Like the Waste King option above, this has a pre-installed power cord in a lightweight and compact design, with sound insulation, removable splash guard, and stainless steel grinders. Because of the reduced horsepower, this model is significantly quieter, which is an acceptable tradeoff if you don't intend to use your disposal daily. The powerful Waste Maid was capable of grinding up anything we threw at it, with relatively quiet operation considering the output. This model is larger and intended for kitchens that have more space beneath their sinks and more food scraps in their sinks. For installation, this one is also compatible with most three-bolt mounting assemblies. It also has a removable splash guard, a permanent magnet motor, and an attached power cord, and it's designed to resist corrosion. A nice bonus feature, it has a magnetic guard to catch metal objects before they enter the disposal, which saves wear and tear on both the disposal and your silverware.
